About the colloquium:
The colloquium is designed for doctoral researchers working in journalism studies. It provides participants with an opportunity to present their research, receive detailed feedback from established scholars and network with other PhD researchers and senior academics.
Each selected participant will be paired with an experienced scholar who will read a substantial piece of work, such as a thesis chapter or paper of 5,000–8,000 words, and provide feedback during the colloquium.
Who can apply:
PhD researchers working on theoretical or empirical projects related to journalism studies may apply.
Researchers at all stages of their doctoral programme are eligible, although candidates in the middle stage of their PhD are particularly encouraged to apply.
Application requirements:
Applicants must submit:
- A 500-word abstract
- Name and institutional affiliation
- Expected graduation date
- Name of the PhD supervisor
- A ranked list of five potential respondents
The abstract should briefly explain:
- Research topic
- Rationale
- Theoretical approach
- Methodological approach
- Findings, where applicable
Selection process:
Submissions will be evaluated through a double-blind review process.
The final selection will also consider diversity, including nationality, gender, institutional affiliation and stage of PhD progress.

Abstract submission deadline: 14 September 2026 at 11:59 PM EST
Acceptance notification: End of October 2026
Full-paper deadline: 21 March 2027
Colloquium date: 21 April 2027
Full-paper requirement:
Accepted participants must submit a full paper or thesis chapter of 5,000–8,000 words by 21 March 2027.
The full paper is mandatory because it will be shared with the assigned respondent before the event.
Important note
The PhD colloquium will take place in person only. Virtual participation is not available.
Participation in the PhD colloquium does not automatically guarantee participation in the main ECREA Journalism Studies Section conference, as the colloquium and conference are separate events.
