About the fellowship:

The Humboldt Research Fellowship supports highly qualified postdoctoral and experienced researchers from around the world to conduct an independent research project in collaboration with a host institution in Germany.

The new 2026 application round opens on 15 July 2026. The Foundation accepts a maximum number of applications during each call, so eligible researchers are advised to prepare their documents and host arrangements early.

Who can apply:

Researchers from all countries except Germany may apply, subject to the detailed nationality and residency requirements.

Postdoctoral researchers:

Applicants should generally have completed their doctorate, or equivalent academic qualification, within the previous four years.

Experienced researchers:

Applicants should generally have completed their doctorate within the previous twelve years and possess a strong publication record and an established research profile.

Fellowship duration:

  • Postdoctoral researchers: 6–24 months
  • Experienced researchers: 6–18 months

Monthly fellowship amount:

  • Postdoctoral researchers: €3,000 per month
  • Experienced researchers: €3,600 per month

Host requirement:

Applicants must identify a suitable academic host at a German research institution. The host must provide a mentoring agreement, confirmation of research facilities and a detailed supporting statement.
