The selected reporter will cover major professional sports in the U.S. capital, with emphasis on the NFL, while also reporting on the intersection of sports, politics, Congress, the judiciary and the White House.

Key responsibilities

Cover major professional sports teams in Washington DC.

Break news and produce deeply reported enterprise stories.

Report on sports issues connected with Congress, the judiciary and the White House.

Cover themes such as college sports, athlete payments, gender equality, sports betting, broadcasting rights and congressional oversight of sports issues.

Work across formats including text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.

Collaborate with AP colleagues on major stories.

Produce journalism that stands out in a crowded media landscape.

Required qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

At least two years of full-time journalism experience may be considered as equivalent experience.

Strong track record of identifying smart and innovative stories.

Authorization to work in the United States or ability to obtain permission to do so.

Advanced professional proficiency in written and spoken English.

Additional language proficiency is a plus.

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

Willingness to work any shift, including nights and weekends, as AP is a 24/7 news operation.

Salary range
