Sony has introduced the FX5, a compact full-frame camera in its Cinema Line aimed at professional and independent video production.

The camera uses a newly developed stacked CMOS sensor and supports open-gate capture, allowing filmmakers to record a larger sensor area for flexible reframing and delivery in different aspect ratios. It also records Sony's X-OCN RAW format internally.

The published specifications include 5K recording at up to 60 frames per second, 4K at up to 120 frames per second and Full HD at up to 240 frames per second. Sony states that the camera provides more than 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3 and uses an AI processing unit for autofocus-related functions.

An optional XLR handle can record audio in-camera at up to 96 kHz and 32-bit float. This is particularly relevant for documentary, field and small-crew production because it can provide greater tolerance when recording unpredictable sound levels.
