The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is accepting applications for its Media Fellowship Program 2026–27.

The programme will support two Canadian journalists to spend time in Asia researching and producing stories for Canadian audiences. Each selected fellow may receive up to C$10,000 towards travel, accommodation and eligible in-country expenses.

Important Eligibility Restriction

This fellowship is not open worldwide.

Applicants must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be employed by a Canadian media organisation or work as a freelancer
  • Have at least two years of journalism experience
  • Have an established publication history in Canadian news media

Eligible professional roles include reporters, feature writers, columnists and freelancers working with Canadian magazines, newspapers, news services, business publications, radio stations, television stations, digital-media organisations or multimedia outlets.

Indian journalists cannot apply unless they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and satisfy the Canadian-media experience requirements.

Previous APF Canada Media Fellowship recipients must wait three years after receiving an earlier award before applying again.

Preferred Proposal Areas

Applicants may propose important or emerging stories concerning Asia and their relevance to Canada.

Preference may be given to proposals relating to:

  • Emerging technologies
  • Artificial intelligence and data governance
  • Economic security
  • Supply-chain resilience
  • Maritime governance and security
  • Energy security
  • Climate solutions
  • Space
  • Trade and investment
  • The Arctic

Application Requirements

Applications must include:

  • A proposal of 500–750 words
  • The motivation and rationale for the selected topic
  • An explanation of its importance to the intended audience
  • A detailed reporting and execution plan
  • A dissemination plan identifying intended publication or broadcast outlets
  • A budget of up to C$10,000
  • A current CV
  • Two examples of published written or broadcast work
  • A letter from a prospective editor or producer indicating willingness in principle to publish or broadcast the resulting stories, subject to normal editorial judgement

Expected Outputs

Selected fellows must produce:

  • At least three stories
  • At least one story intended for digital media
  • A social-media strategy promoting the work
  • One 60-second video or podcast, or a blog-style post aggregating the completed work for the APF Canada website

Completed articles and programmes must be produced by 31 March of the following year.

Fellows must also submit a post-fellowship report of approximately 700–1,000 words and may be invited to share their findings at APF Canada’s Vancouver or Toronto office.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed according to:

  • Significance of the proposed topic
  • Feasibility of the project
  • Potential impact
  • Applicant’s professional qualifications

Funding Conditions

Seventy-five per cent of the fellowship funding will be released after the award agreement is signed. The remaining 25 per cent will be released after the final reporting requirements are completed.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they possess or can obtain the visas required to enter, transit through and leave the proposed destination countries.
