BBC Verify brings together investigative journalists who use editorial tools, technology and specialist techniques to investigate and verify information, videos and images.
Its data-journalism team works on national and international projects in collaboration with journalists and specialist teams across BBC News.
About the Role
The Data Journalist will identify and develop stories using datasets, statistics and evidence.
The work may range from quick-turnaround visualisations responding to newly released data to original investigations and longer-term collaborative projects.
The journalist should be able to examine figures critically, identify the wider context and explain findings clearly to BBC audiences and colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to data-journalism projects across BBC platforms
- Originate news stories and investigations using data
- Analyse statistics and identify meaningful patterns
- Clean, parse and query datasets
- Produce data-driven interactives and visualisations
- Create content for digital, social media, television and radio
- Collaborate with journalists, correspondents, designers and engineers
- Explain complex data accurately and clearly
- Support original and longer-term investigative projects
Essential Skills and Experience
Applicants should have:
- Experience working in a dedicated data-journalism role
- An understanding of statistics and statistical analysis
- Ability to clean, parse and query data using R and Excel
- Demonstrable experience developing original story ideas from data
- Experience creating data visualisations
- Familiarity with tools such as Flourish or Datawrapper
- Strong editorial judgement and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively across different BBC News teams
Salary and Benefits
The proposed salary range is £28,000–£38,000, depending on the selected candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills and experience.
